Community Impact

This posting is a follow-up to what I wrote about yesterday. My concern is that we cannot allow Journey Church to become an island unto itself. We must be INTENTIONAL about connecting with our community, not in an effort to merely market Journey Church, but because we believe that everybody spends forever somewhere!

Unfortunately, most people outside of the faith have a negative perception of churches and Christians. So, our challenge is to engage our community in a way that surprises them with God's love. This is why we passed out over 2,000 bottles of water at our county fair last year. We were attempting to grab people's attention! It's why our teens held a twisted car wash where they paid strangers $1 to wash the stranger's car. We wanted to surprise people with a message of grace. It's why we passed out 9 volt batteries (for smoke detectors) to strangers on the Saturday before the time change. We want people to know that we care about their safety.

I want to continue these planned, strategic ACTS OF KINDNESS! In addition, I want us to find creative ways of communicating our message. This summer, we're going to be sponsoring a car at our county fair's demolition derby. I love this idea! In fact, I'm looking into how we can actually become one of the sponsors of the demolition derby! Why? Because it's a HUGE event for our county and it's the least likely place that people would expect to see Jesus! Let's continue to think of non-traditional, creative ways that we can communicate God's love!
